Ripoff sneaky charges difficulty cancelling

I accessed freecreditreports.com back in 2/06. Evidently, in the "fine print", it states that if there is no cancellation activated with in the 30 day free trial period, you are autuomatically signed up for a membership that includes a monthly charge of $12.95.

This charge came to my attention recently.

When I called CIC Triple Advantage, the company listed on my statement, I was given a bit of a run around. I mentioned that I wanted to cancel an account I didn't remember signing up for. The first thing the lady on the other end asked me for was my CREDIT CARD NUMBER! I said no, not over the phone. She then asked for my SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER! Again, I refused. Her claim was that she needed them to verify that I had an account with them. I said that if I had an account, she should be able to find me in the system using my name and address, I was not going to give out the other info over a phone line.

Eventually, she asked for an email address, with confirmation being my full name, and my mother's maiden name. Even then, she couldn't just cancel the account. She tried multiple times to get me to access my credit report just one more time. I refused, telling her I didn't see what that had to do with cancelling the account I didn't want.

Finally, she told me she was initiating the procedure to cancel the account, and that I still had access to the report until 5/7/06.

MY warning to others... Be prepared to have to get tough with these people when you try to cancel an account with them.
