ESBI - Enhanced Service Billing
Internet scam thru your local phone bill

I noticed a charge on my phone bill this month for $14.95 from a company called ESBI who was charging me for an email service I supposibly signed up for on the web. I have purchased items on the web recently but did not sign up for any sort of service so I called them to find out what the charge was all about.

I talked to a rep who informed me that I signed up for their service online thru a company called smileymedia, which I did not, and that I was going to get all these coupons and yada yada yada blah blah blah, I told her I did not sign up nor was I aware that someone signed me up. Did their company have any accountability in which the person signed up could verify their true intent to sign up for their service prior to it being implemented.

She tells me we have no way of tracking your email is read but we have sent you an e-mail at your e-mail address which explained to service. I told her I did not get any e-mail from her company. She then said that they have a record that I read the e-mail on Oct 10th which I reponded to by saying that YOU just told me you had no way of tracking if it was read and now you are telling me you can?

So now she backtracks and keeps repeating well, WHEN YOU signed up for the service... Blah blah blah... So then I ask for her supervisor since she is giving me the runaround and she puts me on hold for a supervisor. About a minute later the same voice comes back on the phone with a different name and says she is the supervisor... I laugh and say. You sure sound like the same woman I was just talking to... No she says, yet she has the SAME voice... They must think people are idiots... Anyway long story short she says the same thing, well when you ordered our service... Blah blah... I tell her I will be speaking to her again soon.

So I call my local phone company who say there is nothing they can do because the federal government has allowed 3rd party companies to bill people thru them for services...

I guess I need to call my congressman???
