Energizer Technuity
Poor quality UPS

Internet & Web

In batteries.com offered an Energizer ER-HMOF600 UPS at a deeply discounted $19.95 price. Energizer has been around for decades, so you can trust that name, right?

The first sign of potential trouble is the UPS was hot, hot, hot. Not too hot to touch, and you do expect these devices to get pretty warm sometimes, but it was hot enough to be a concern.

Next it started going into battery mode frequently for no reason I could ever discern. At first, turning the UPS off for a while would help the problem for some time. But the problem became more frequent until the UPS became unusable. If the UPS was on, it would beep loudly endlessly (the alarm can't be silenced) for the entire duration of being on. The UPS was just a 3-outlet surge protector.

Tech support's response was prompt and polite. They suggested a new battery. I got one locally for $23. It also had slightly higher mAh than the original. The replacement process was moderately difficult because there was hardly a free cubic centimeter in the battery compartment. I decided to leave the cover off for thermal release. I turned the UPS on and got the same trouble as before. And unlike many of Belkin's UPSs, charging occurs only while the UPS is on, not at any time it is connected to the wall outlet.

Tech support said I should send the UPS to them for warranty repair. But the cost of a shipping box and UPS or FedEx ground combined would have been about $17 — and they wanted $8.99 for return shipping as well. Add this $25.99 to the $23 already spent, and this is as much as it would cost to buy a brand new one right now. Or one could consider that the $25.99 is greater than the original purchase price just to get back to where I started from.

In the end, I decided to simply cut my losses and buy another UPS of a different brand, a Belkin special at CompUSA. Although I would still buy Energizer brand for AA batteries, I would emphatically recommend anyone looking for a UPS to consider APC, Belkin, or TrippLite instead.
