Unethical billing

I paid off my three year membership early and in full in June. I also told them I cancelling any further memberships.
In August I get a call from a collection agency stating that I owed them $250 for an auto renewal. I told them I never signed up for auto renewal and they told me I didn't check the box on the contract to avoid it. Not that I was ever told about that option.
I was also told that I didn't send in a "notarized" letter cancelling the auto renewal so I was liable for the balance, even though I haven't been to that gym in two or more years.
I have negotiated to pay $100 to them in order to avoid negative credit consequences, but I am looking to get my $100 back as well as inform the public of their unethical business practices.
