Wednesday June 4th

My hair appointment was on Wednesday June 4th, at 1:00 pm. My hair stylists name was Sonya, and she was employed by J C Pennys Hair Salon.

When we arrived, Sonya took me to her station. My husband sat in a station next to me, because he was getting his hair cut. Sonya asked me questions about my hair. She asked me if I had sensitive skin, and I said that I did. I told Sonya that I colored my hair 4 weeks prior, and that I was wanting to get my hair straightened. I also told Sonya that I was trying to get my hair to grow longer. My hair at that point was to my shoulders. Sonya did not do a hair strand test to see if the product would damage my hair. She did not have me sign any waver, of any kind. She did not warn me of the possible damage that the chemical straightening product could do to color treated hair.

Sonya applied a petroleum like product to my hair line around my face and base of neck, She then began applying the chemical to my hair. There were two jugs of hair straightening product on her station. One had a label for thin, colored treated hair. The other was for regular strength. Sonya was using the regular strength product. I asked Sonya if she should use the product listed for color treated, thin hair because I was concerned. She answered, No, that product will not work for your hair, because you have strong curls. I trusted Sonya, and her professional opinion.

Sonya applied the product with a brush, starting at the base of my head and working upwards. After my hair was saturated with the product, she used a plastic comb on my hair. This was painful. She combed my hair in a front to back motion. Sonya told me to tell her when my scalp was burning. When my scalp began to burn, I told Sonya. My scalp began to burn on the top and right side of my head. She then took me to the sink, and sat me in a chair. She did not wash the product out of my hair at that point. She had me sit there for some time. As I waited there, Sonya walked away and then came back to where I was. She then washed the product out of my hair. She also applied other products to it. When we were at the sink, I asked Sonya if she thought it was a better idea that I used a chemical straightening product, rather than using a flat iron, and blow drying my hair.

She said, Yes. When Sonya took me back to her station, she began to style my hair. My husband was finished getting his hair cut, he sat closer to me, and watched Sonya style my hair. Sonya styled my hair, with me facing away from the mirror the entire time. She put more product in my hair, and used a flat iron and a blow dryer. She burned my scalp at least 3 times with the blow dryer. When her next appointment arrived, Sonya walked away from my chair. I then turned my seat around to see what my hair looked like, because I was concerned. Sonya never offered me a mirror so that I could see the back of my head. Never before had someone cut and styled my hair, with me facing away from the mirror for the entire duration of my appointment.

When I saw my hair, I wanted to cry. It was entirely burnt from ends to scalp. My hair felt extremely dry, and looked terrible. Sonya came over, and asked me if I liked my hair. I didnt answer her, because I was terrified and didnt want to make a scene.

She said the only thing I could do at that point was condition it. She took us to the counter, and walked away. She did not say good-bye, she didnt even apologize.
The treatment cost us $60.00.

After the Treatment:

When we arrived home, I immediately went into the bathroom to look at my hair. It looked and felt like steel wool. I was very upset. That night I washed my hair, and conditioned it as instructed. My hair began to break off from the middle of the hair shaft. I also noticed that treatment had changed the color of my hair. My hair came out from the scalp. My scalp burned and was painful to the touch, especially in the places where Sonya had used the comb harshly on my scalp. We went to the store and purchased bandannas so that I could try to hide my hair when I went to work. This upset me very much.

Friday June 6th:

My hair continued to break, and was very dry and damaged. More hair fell out, and my hair continued to look worse and worse. My scalp was still painful, and sensitive to the touch in the front and to the left and right side of my head. My hair laid flat on my head, and I could not style it to make it look any better. When we cut my hair, it was cut gradually to see if any of the hair could be salvaged.

My husband and I decided to cut my hair down to the scalp, because all of my hair was damaged. There was no part of the hair that was salvageable. All of it was frizzy and dry. Upon shaving my head, we began to notice red burns on my scalp on the front and sides of my head. These places were sensitive to the touch. There were spots of baldness where my hair had fallen out.

Monday June 9th:

When my scalp sensitivity continued, we took pictures with a digital camera and a Kodak camera. These pictures clearly show the redness and damage caused by the treatment.

(We currently have a claim through J C Penny's Insurance Carrier, AIG, and it is pending. Though, it is important to note that Sonya Maylor has lied to both her employer and the insurance carrier as to what product she used on my hair. She denies using the bad product on my hair, which caused complete, and uncorrectable damage to my hair.

I saw her with my own eyes use the wrong product; this is why I am accusing her of obstruction of justice. My husband and I are reasonable people, but we do not think it is fair to lie the way that sonya and her salon co-workers have done to cover up a very bad situation. If anything, we just hope that people know that it is important to tell the truth, and face up to what you have done as a professional, if you are guilty of using bad judgement. It is important to tell the darn truth!
