Company says I can cancel if I move and then isn't honest

Is your gym doing its best to alienate it's customers? Gold's Gym is! I join the gym because I was told explicitly thatwhen I go home for the summer I can cancel as long as I bring proof that I'm moving and that I don't live near any other gold's gyms. I get involved with another fitness program at my university and don't go to Gold's Gym except possibly 1-2 times a month and am incurring no cost to the gym. Which is fine because I didn't cancel.

But when I go to cancel I offer to bring a magazine addressed to me at the location I'm going back to, my telephone I signed up with has that places area code, and the billing address that I'm charged membership fees is even there, my proof of insurance has the new address and I had several forms of identification. But somehow according to Gold's Gym I must be lying about going back or something because none of this proof is sufficient. I'm told that I need a utilities bill and some other kind of arbitrary proof that doesn't even make sense and THAT I WASN'T TOLD ABOUT when I signed up.

I'm moving back and staying with my parents over the summer (I'm a college student) and they pay the utilities so I don't even know how I'd have that bill. I mean should I send them postcard from my house? Do I need to take one of their employees with me to make sure I'm not part of some big conspiracy trying to get out of my membership dues? I mean what is this gyms problem? All of this for what?

All you have to do is search for Gold's Gym to see all of the complaints about it. Gyms are supposed to be a place where people can feel good about themselves and improve their lives, they aren't for harassing their customers.

This is pettiness at it's worse. And the fact that it is so hard to cancel is very telling about the quality of the gym. I will bring both forms of proof to the gym, but if there is another "surprise" then I will file an official complaint to the Attorney General's office, and formal legal action might follow. I'm writing this now to warn others to stay away from the gym as it has displayed open contempt for anyone wanting to cancel.
