LOA, Lady Fitness USA Lady of America refuses to cancel my membership - was told could cancel contract any time for any reason

I originally joined a gym in Bedford, TX around March. At the time I joined the gym, it was known as Lady Fitness USA. It has since changed to be owned by Lady of America, or "LOA." At this time I entered into a 3 year contract with the company to keep my membership for that length of time. However, I was told outright by the girl who signed me up (Clara), that I would be able to cancel at any time for "any reason" before the 3 year contract was up. She told me that the reason they even did contracts, was really just "to get people in the habit of coming to the gym, so they won't want to stop coming."

I have since tried contacting the corporate company which is located in Roy, Utah, and they acted like this claim which I have written above was not even worth acknowledging. They did not say anything about it each time I have written, emailed, or called. They simply said, "well we're not able to cancel your contract, but we can mark a note stating that your contract will automatically end at the end of the term." Obviously this is not what I was told at the time of signing up.

What makes it extremely even further frustrating, is that the gym now has signs which state "No Contract. No Hassle." and, a lower monthly membership fee of only $14.95. I was paying about $40 a month. That is ridiculous and just bad business.

The company is currently calling me constantly because I have not been paying the last few months dues. I currently cannot afford to pay the membership because my husband was laid off in April and just recently regained employment. I would however want to cancel my membership anyway, because I am not satisfied with the gym.
Has this happened to anyone else?
