Was Mis-led when wanting to cancel membership

On July 16th I entered the LA Fitness in Poway and wanted to cancel my membership. I was told that I had until the 15th of August to do so.
On August 13th I went in to cancel membership and was told that I needed to send in a cancellation form and that it has to be in 20 days before cancellation and then be charged for another month of dues. I was never informed that the notice has to be sent registered mail and was fortunate enough to find this information out when I was reading many other complaints regarding cancellations.
