To add insult to injury... Literally

Health & Medicine

Right before we moved, my husband's dentist told him he needed a tooth fixed. So after we moved, he went to Dr. Crumpley, on a friend's recommendation. (Our friend has also since received bad treatment.) Instead of fixing the tooth that we requested (and was much worse) she decided to fix a different tooth that just needed a filling. It took her four different tries to get the filling to stay. My husband was in the dentist chair for almost 4 hours - just for a filling.

To make matters worse, she ground out the healthy tooth instead of the decayed tooth, and then put a filling on top of it. This left the tooth to decay undetected, and build up pressure on the nerve. The pressure on the nerve didn't cause pain in the tooth, but instead referred the pain into his ear and head. My husband suffered with a severe headache for over three weeks. Not even his neurologist could figure out what was causing his pain - even after CT scans and MRIs.

Finally the filling popped out. This ended the headache, but then allowed the nerve to be severed, causing my husband to be in excruciating pain and have to have a root canal and a crown.

All in all, we and our insurance paid out over $10,000 for her mistake. To make it all better, we moved six months after my husband saw Dr. Crumpley. I had called before my husband first went for treatment and they told me that they did accept our insurance and that everything (as far as filing claims, etc.) would be taken care of.

In the six months after the visit, we never heard from Dr. Crumpley's office. Then, ten months later, we received an irate phone call from her office manager, telling us our bill was delinquent and that they did not accept our insurance. When I explained what had happened, I was told that they had already filed the claim as a courtesy, but that it was our job to pay the dentist office and our insurance would reimburse us. None of this was anything like what I had been told before my husband was treated. To make a long story short, they never correctly filed the insurance claim for us, instead sending us a form to take care of it ourselves. We had refused to pay anything until the insurance was taken care of and we were told we would be turned over to collections.

Also, when I explained what had happened to my husband's tooth that was treated, I was told that "Everything that you are telling me is irrelevant." On various occasions, the office manager lied to us about seemingly trivial matters, and even accused us of lying when we said that the insurance claim was not processed (the claim had been sent to the wrong address) and when we told her that we had moved and thus never received our notices. I've dealt with a lot of medical office personnel, but none have ever been as rude as she was. We paid the account in full and will never go back. I would highly encourage anyone NOT to go to Dr. Crumpley.
