Health & Medicine

With my wedding less than a month away, I went to get a cleaning at Family Dental. While there, I was told that I needed a deep scaling done because I had build up deep below my gum line. I was told that they were going to check with my insurance and let me know what it would cost.

Before leaving, they gave me quotes for each visit and was told it was what my insurance would not cover. I decided it was something I could afford so I went ahead and made my first appointment.

When I came to my first appointment, half my mouth was numbed and the cleaning was done. I was told it would be $100 for that day. I paid and made the appointment for the next cleaning.

The day before the next cleaning, I was called and informed that they had been running my insurance for years and "assumed" that it was the same that they were used to.in reality my company had started using a partial insurance also for people not yet eligible for full insurance, as I was since I had been there less than a year.

They apologized and told me that they did not cover the deep scaling at all and so I now owed them another $250. I told them I was going to have to cancel my next appointment because I did not have that kind of money.

Once I got full insurance, I went ahead and went to a new dentist to get the rest of it done. When I was there, they requested my x-rays and set up the appointment for the other half of my mouth.

Not only did they NOT send the x-rays, but when I got there for the appointment the dental hygienist told me she could not tell what side of my mouth had been done previously because NONE of my build up was bad enough to need this kind of work done.

I wrote a letter informing them that I did not intend to pay until my perio chart (which I was told by the new dentist was required in order for this kind of scaling to be done) was sent to the new dentist and also I wanted an explanation why this was done. They sent the x-rays, I was not informed of any perio chart being sent.

I left my address and phone number on the letter. I was never contacted. To this date I have not received any more bills or calls from them. This was approximately 2 months ago.instead, I get a call today at WORK from a collection agency informing me I did not have a valid complaint as it was my choice to have the work done. They asked for my bank information, my work information, how much I make, my husband's information...

It seems to me that my biggest mistake here was TRUSTING a doctor. I was under the impression they would be reliable and professional.instead, I believe they heard me say that I was getting married and took advantage of me. Not to mention the fact that they never even bothered calling my insurance.

Do not use this dentist without getting a second opinion and knowing exactly what your insurance covers!!!
