Incompetent negligent dentist victimizes patient, hacks tooth, makes shoddy crown, neglects to check fit, hacks crowns leaving jagged edges

Health & Medicine

This is an informational report on a bad Knoxville dentist.
His name is Jay S. Desvaux, DDS.

A complaint was filed with the Tennessee state dental board a few months ago. The complaint is referenced as case # 200600595.

The state of Tennessee medical complaints investigator said that the complaint was "my word against Desvaux' word" and unless he admitted wrongdoing that there was not much that they could do. She was right. The state dental board found that Desvaux conduct "did not constitute a violation of the statues and/or rules governing the profession."

This incident happened several years ago. I did not file a complaint earlier because I had no way of proving that Desvaux did me wrong. Also, I was embarrassed to talk about it for a long period of time. When an individual is defiled and violated at a personal level, the way Desvaux did me, it's very difficult to tell others.

* Summary of the Offenses Desvaux Committed Against the Patient/Victim *
(The term patient or victim below is written in third party narrative and refers to the undersigned filer of this report)

After briefly hacking/grinding a back molar tooth Desvaux neglected to check a partial mouth mold he used for the permanent crown to see if it fit.

Desvaux neglected to inspect the temporary crown to see if it fit properly before allowing the patient/victim to leave the office.

The temporary fit badly. Desvaux neglected to attend to the victims' pain for two weeks and instead said to "take Tylenol."

Desvaux neglected to check the completed crown to see if it fit before gluing the crown in place.

Desvaux then, without asking the victim's permission, ground/hacked on two good crowns leaving jagged edges.

—Desvaux, Assistant Gave Conflicting Reports— Desvaux' hygienist, Janet, said that the victim had a "cavity" on the very back tooth of his lower bite. Desvaux came into the room and said that the victim had a "broken filling" in the tooth.

The victim first thought that Janets' saying that he had a *cavity* while Desvaux saying that the victim had a *broken filling* was just a simple difference in dialect.

—Hygienist Had a Four-Year Degree— Janet had a diploma on the wall that said that she has a four bachelor of science degree from the University of Tennessee with a major in Dental Hygiene.

—Hygienist With Degree Should Know Difference Between a "Cavity" and a "Broken Filling"— A person with a four-year bachelor of science degree with a major in Dental Hygiene ought to know the difference between a cavity and a broken filling.

—They did not get their stories straight— In light of Desvaux' neglectful conduct (described below) it is clear that he had no intent of providing quality dental care. He certainly is capable of lying to a patient it appears.

—Victim Was Accustomed to Good Dental Care— The victim had had nine (9) crowns installed previously. The victims' previous dentist always took a full mouth mold for the permanent crown. He then took a partial mouth mold for the temporary crown. The victim had always been accustomed to competent dental care in the past.

—Desvaux Hacked, Was Sloppy— Desvaux numbed the victim's mouth. He then took about 2-3 minutes to grind the tooth then walked out of the treatment room. The victim was a little bit shocked at Desvaux' brevity. For the previous nine crowns his previous dentist always took enough time (a lot longer than 2-3 minutes) to make sure that the tooth to be crowned was properly prepared for the crown.

—Desvaux Neglected to Inspect, Make Good Temporary, Permanent Molds— Desvaux' assistant took a partial mouth mold. She then took a dental instrument and carved a piece of metal for the temporary crown, stuck it on the tooth that Desvaux had just ground/hacked, then said that the victim was ready leave.

—Ground, Hacked Tooth Began to Ache— The numbness wore off. The tooth began to ache. The victim called Desvaux' office and told them of the pain. Desvaux' assistant said Desvaux said to "take Tylenol." They said nothing more.

—Victim Had Earlier Told Desvaux He Was Worried About Amalgam Underneath Previous Nine Crowns— Before all of this occurred the victim had told Desvaux that he was worried that the previous dentist had left remnants of the mercury amalgam fillings underneath the crowns.

—Desvaux Neglected to Inspect the Tooth, Neglected to See if Crown Fit— Two weeks later Desvaux walked into the treatment room, said "open, " snapped the crown in place, placed a piece of wood between the victim's bite and said "bite down." Desvaux did not inspect the tooth to see what was causing the pain. Desvaux did not inspect the crown before gluing to see if it fit.

—The Victim's Bite Did Not Feel Right— A Desvaux assistant walked into the room, removed the wooden piece, and said "ok, " signifying that the victim was ready to leave. Alarmed at Desvaux' lack of attention the victim said that the bite did not feel right.

—Deavaux Ground on Two Good Crowns— Desvaux walked into the room, inspected the victim's mouth, then quickly ground, hacked on two good, previously existing crowns without asking the victim's permission. There were rough, jagged edges where Desvaux had ground.

—Victim Feels Desvaux Ruining of The Crowns Was Deliberate— The victim believes that Desvaux thought that he was dissatisfied with the previous crowns so he destroyed the surface thinking that the victim would let him install more crowns.

—Janet Would Jerk Upward on Floss When Cleaning— Hygienist Janet would routinely jerk upward on dental floss during previous cleaning sessions. The victims' earlier dentist had said to always pull floss out sideways. Janet said that "Dr. Desvaux wants to know if any crowns are loose so she has been instructed to pull upwards."

—Janet's Jerking of the Dental Floss Was Intended to Loosen Crowns Victim Believes— In hindsight, it seems reasonable to conclude that Desvaux wanted to loosen and destroy the previous crowns so that he could sell new crowns to the victim. That's why he had instructed Janet to jerk upwards.
