I was surfing online a little less than four months back and stumbled across an ad for a "Free Sample" bottle of Hoodia for weight loss. All that had to be paid was about $3 for shipping and handling. I'm a little 'cuddly' so I decided "why not?" and ordered the sample.

Everyone knows a free SAMPLE means you get a small portion of the product in question and only have to pay shipping and handling. And that's it. You don't have to buy anything else unless you want to.

A free TRIAL means you get a small portion of the product in question and have to send it back before a certain date or else you will be entered into a full membership.

This ad said it was a free SAMPLE. All the forms said free SAMPLE. So I entered my debit card information and about a week later I got the "sample" bottle. Personally, I wasn't impressed with the product, so I didn't bother with ordering more.

About three weeks later a full sized bottle showed up at my house and a charge of $99.41 appeared on my bank statement.By the time I noticed the charge it was too late to dispute it. I called the company and found out that what they sent me was a TRIAL, not a SAMPLE.

I argued with the rep I was stuck with, saying that the ad said it was a SAMPLE, which meant there were to be no other charges unless I ordered something. I told her that was false advertising and the charges to my account could be argued as fraud and demanded she cancel the membership. She stated that I should have paid more attention to the ad and hung up on me!

I was so mad. Over two months later another bottle showed up at my house, and ANOTHER $99.41 charge appeared in my account! I immediately put the package unopened back in the mail with "Return To Sender" written on the front. On the back I wrote "Unsolicited", "Membership Was Cancelled", and "Refund Demanded". The next day I called the company again and demanded again that they cancel this membership that I didn't sign for. This lady said no problem and gave me a cancellation confirmation number.

Everyone also knows that when you return a product, unused, unopened... The company is supposed to issue a refund. They cannot charge you for a product you didn't keep or use. I never even opened the package! About two weeks after I returned the package, I noticed the money still had not been returned. So I called the company yet AGAIN!

I talked to another lady and explained that I had returned the last package and cancelled my membership and demanded my money back. She said she was not authorized to issue a refund. She also said I should have waited until they got the package back before cancelling my membership. Since it was cancelled before the pills got back to them, there was nothing she could do.

This is total FRAUD! I'm out almost $200 that I couldn't spare, and there's nothing to be done. The company refuses to issue a refund based on the fact that I can't tell when mail is delivered in different states. The bank won't help me because the charge has been in the bank for too long. They say there's nothing they can do.

I've filled out all the usual "charge dispute" paperwork with the bank and have still been told there's nothing I can do.

Don't let this happen to you! Don't fall in this trap!
