Warranty is worthless on ereade

We purchased two Pandigital e-readers the day after Thanksgiving 2011 at Radio Shack in Altus.
My reader has never charged properly - you had to get the cable 'just right' for it to connect. We never knew why it took twice as long for it to charge as did my hubby's. It also frequently reset itself for no good reason. I just dealt with it, since I knew it wasn't 'top of the line'.

Now it has become impossible to get the reader to charge. I took it to the local Radio Shack in Stillwater (because we were visiting family 200 miles from home in Altus, where we bought them). The manager saw me walk in & turned & headed to the door in the back of the store. I calmly waited at the counter until he finally returned. I told him that the reader wouldn't charge & that it has always had a problem since I got it.
At first, the manager said I had bent the cable end & that's why it wouldn't charge. I explained to him that the cord in my hand was my hubby's cord, which worked fine with his reader. I just brought it in with me since he had his in the car too. I told him it wouldn't work properly with either cord, & I'd had problems with it since I bought it. He told me I must have 'bent the port & broke it loose' in the reader. The port looks fine, with no apparent damage & I haven't done anything to it.
He said he wouldn't do anything for me, & since I must have damaged it, I could try to contact the manufacturer, but they probably wouldn't do anything either. They are supposed to have a year warranty but he says I broke it, even though there is no apparent damage.
I have attempted to contact Pandigital, but they haven't returned my message yet, 5 days later.
