NSF on rebate Checks!

I received a rebate check about a year after the purchase and mail off of request! A friend deposited it for me and the check bounced! Now I have to pay her the amount of the check and also the service charge! When I called they said I would have to call a rebate department that has a answering machine on! Something has to be done!
