Told Phone Could Be Traded In, Then Refused at Store

I bought my cell phone about 6 months ago and I have been losing service. I have pre paid and I had called the information line for T Mobile and they said they could trade my phone in for a new one. So I went to the store and told them what he said. The employee said it is not allowed to trade in phones after the first 4 weeks of buying a cell phone. I am thinking about switching companies because of the false information. I thought you were the best company and I guess I was wrong.
