Stole $1200 Cash / 2 bogus warehouses / product was never sent

My boyfriend tried to buy me a 70-200,2.8 Canon camera lense. He really did not even know that the price should have been a $1000 more than he paid. He began a search on Craig's list, after I told him a used lense would be fine. He found a wedding photographer there, who was getting out of the business and was selling some of his equipment. However, when he contacted this man the lense was already gone and he referred my boyfriend to a NC (local for us) warehouse where he could buy one for a good deal. My boyfriend then searched the name of the company on the internet, High Resolution Cameras, and verified the name and address the man had given him. Because he did want to get ripped off, he decided to drive 2 hours away to Greensboro and pay cash for the item. Although the company had stated when he spoke to them on the phone that they had the lense in stock, when he got there they did not. He says he saw a warehouse full of rows of camera boxes, which he now believes were stagged and probably empty, so he decided it was a legitimate company and gave them $1500 cash. They handed him a reciept and said the lense would be delivered in a week or two. After a couple months of run arounds with Customer support, excuses, and fake tracking numbers, he decided the lense was never going to come and asked for a refund. They said there would be a $295 restocking fee, and of course he objected to this, but finally decided some money back was better than losing it all. He was told to go to another warehouse in Charlotte, which was much closer to pick up the money. When he got there they handed him a check (from somewhere in California) for a mere $295 (the restocking fee). They then told him that he'd have to contact the customer servive again about the wrong amount being sent. He was surprised to be able to even cash the $295 and then drove the 2 hours again to Greensboro. The original warehouse was empty, so he filed a complaint with the police department. The police him told that he would need to file in small claims court but would probably have trouble even locating the company to get them into court. His reciept was basically useless!
My point to this rip off report is that cash is not always KING. Atleast if he used a credit card (from a good bank), then they would have refunded his stolen money and gone after the theives themselves. He would have simply needed to change his credit card number. Also, I have seen reports about searching a companies address on line and if there isn't a physical adress then you should worry. Well the theives have read this too, and now they rent addresses and fake stock! Bottom line, if they have not been around for years and have a good reputation (search complaints on the net), then we will not do business with them. We will likely never be able to recover the $1200 because it was cash. Having a reciept is worthless if there is not a business who cares to honor it.
