RCA RCA Audiovox Audiovox Electronics Corp. Misleading

Electronics and household app.

I purchased the RCA Audiovox TH1702 2gb fm tuner & flash mp3 player, with the distinct impression that I would at last be able to upload audiobooks at no cost from my local library, and then transfer the files to this small mp3 player. With its built in FM tuner with 20 presets, a voice recorder, and the capacacity to hold 600 songs, I felt it was all I would ever need. It even allows free online music from MP3 Tunes, and has a nice secure flip out USB connection and detachable carrying clip. For $39, this WAS a bargain!
Alas, it was not to be! After successfully downloading the library's software and the book I wanted to listen to, and then installing the MP3 player's software (AND new firmware after several frustrating hours) I learned to my dismay that the ONLY books I would be able to listen to would have to come from the company's tie-in, www.audio.com, a subscription service for $7.95 monthly. This was only after attempting to solve my problem with my computer not recognizing the device that was clearly installed and not being able to transfer the audio files.

The company web site is a disaster. According to their protocol, you have to "register" and then "view at least 2 questions and answers" before being able to e-mail them your question! Obviously, this was not the answer I was looking for.
Thanks to my background as a librarian, I put in the search terms "RCA Audiovox customer service telephone number" and quickly obtained the following number: 1-866-449-7112. When I called at approximately 4 PM, the phone was answered immediately by a very polite and articulate customer service rep who walked me through installing the latest firmware, and then hung on while I attempted to transfer a very small test audio file. At last I learned the bad news: the only audio files I could upload would have to be obtained from audio.com, their related company. Live, learn, and read the VERY, VERY fine print. Now I have to take it back, and probably buy a much more expensive compatible device.
