$3,000 Surround Sound System for next to Nothing? Think Again

I was approached by a Hispanic man (late 20's) driving a green minivan. He was trying to sell me a Davinci DV-6030 (a $3,000 MSRP surround sound system) in a grocery store parking lot. He claimed to have received extra units prior to his scheduled delivery at the Great Wolf Lodge located about ten minutes North. He also insisted that someone had just offered him $800 for a unit but only paid $600 because he was short on money.

He tried selling me two extras for around $850, but I told him no. Negotiations proceeded, and I settled on one for $375. He followed me to the bank and waited while I withdrew and handed him the money. I had just under $300 total, so he accepted what I had. I received phony information about his company (that doesn't exist), the product, and his name. The surround sound system was worthless, and I was out $300 with no way of getting it back.

Now I don't know which is worse: going without the money I really needed or living with the sheer embarassment.
