Ripoff Accessed my phone number through my modem and charged my local phone bill

I have a friend who used to own a small phone company. He did the investigating into this.

Basically what has happened is, our internet service provider has allowed 3rd party sites to charge us for nothing and attach it to our local phone bill.

When you dial up the internet, the server you call has your number stored in it. When you go to what I will boldly call affiliates of your Internet provider ex (JUNO) web site (s) they time how long you were on the site and then send you a bill for $3.99 a minute attached to your phone bill. This can be done without you, or your computer dialing a number at all. Using the connection you already have.

We had only 2 adults living here, and at the time neither one of us ever clicked on anything that stated there were going to be any charges.

I am not saying that JUNO is getting a cut, But if you want Juno to make sure this doesn't happen again, you have to call them and ask to get the block (I am unsure if there is a charge or not) I am sure there is.

I was thinking 'if this is legal, I think I will go out and get a 900 number and go around and wash peoples cars and send them a bill along with their local phone bill. At least their car will be clean!
