Auction Road
DISHONEST SCAM Unauthorized Charges on Card abused & mistreated

Education & Science

I got Auction Road's info from a link in Careerbuilder. They were advertising employment, not a business opportunity. I called for more info and got a high-speed sales pitch from someone named Chad.

Chad stated that this was a business opportunity reselling Auction Road's products on ebay, that there was the opportunity to make $4000-$8000 a month and that I could try the program for free for 30 days. Chad asked for my personal and contact info so he could send me the materials. Chad then asked me for a credit card "just for security purposes." It was not until after I gave him the account info that I was told I would be charged $9.95 a month for 9 months starting today. At this point, the fact that I knew very little about how the program actually worked and the feeling that I was going to be stuck paying for thousands of dollars of inventory without having the funds to do so really hit me, so I told Chad that I just wanted to hold off on making that charge so I could have more time to consider the program and to check things with my husband.

Then things got really ugly. Chad actually proceeded to lecture condescendingly to me: about how I must not have been listening to him when he told me about the program b/c I oked everything but now said no; that I would be able to explain things to my husband better if I just got the program and could show it to him; that I can cancel any time, even today, so I had nothing to lose. I kept emphasizing that I was uncomfortable paying out anything right now and stated that I was not authorizing the charge. Chad incredibly kept yelling at me - telling me how his time is precious and he's already got the info so I should just go with the program as he was making good money with it and obviously I needed the money or wouldn't be calling. I kept stating that the bottom line was that I was not going to begin the program today (when he kept insisiting that I could cancel at anytime, I told him to consider this my cancellation call as well), but I told him I wanted to make sure no charge would be put on my card. He then told me that I was acting like this was a big scam, and if it was, he had my info and would have already used it, so I could just hang up. I told him I would if he confirmed that there's no charge on my account. Chad just kept on lecturing about how dumb I was to miss this opportunity. Once he started to talk about my husband and daughter, I hung up (it was over 25 minutes that I withstood his beratings).

I then called my credit card company to make sure no charge had actually been incurred. It was no more than 15 minutes after my call to Auction Road. Shockingly enough (or unshockingly enough), Auction Road had already charged my account TWICE! Once for $9.93 and another for over $89. Apparently, the other thing Chad forgot to mention is that the although the price of the program may be $9.95 a month (and although Chad pushed the fact that it was only a $9.95 a month investment so I had nothing to lose), the company charges you for your entire 9 months of membership at once - when you sign up for their free trial! This is something I found out by reading one of the reports on this website. At no point was I ever told that my card would be charged for almost $100. I was only ever quoted the $9.95 (but remember, I was only told about that after they secured my card info).

From reading other reports here, it appears as though this is the basic MO of this company. Also, from reading the reports here, it appears as though Chad lied to me about how he is paid - after about the 3rd time I tried to state that I wasn't authorizing the charge, I told Chad that I understood his job (as a telemarketer) b/c I too had done that, so I understood that he was supposed to upsell me and not let me off the hook. He stated that he was not a telemarketer and was hourly with no commissions, but I saw another post on this site where the woman did finally hear from a manager that the reps were paid commissions.

The most shocking aspect wasn't that it's a scam, but the nerve of the people working for them - this man condescneded to me endlessly and at times, laughed at me outright. I am most concerned now that they will use my personal info fraudulantly. Please inform anyone you know looking to make extra money that this isn't the way!
