YMCA San Francisco
Illegal and Dangerous Practices

As long as I have been working at the YMCA of San Francisco, I have seen countless examples of illegal activity within the organization. For example, I worked for their summer camp, and I was forced to supervise 9-15 children at times and was unable to take a break during an 8-9 hour day, which is illegal. I was often put in unsafe situations, for example one of the children I worked with had disabilities, which I was not prepared for and working with disabled children was not in the job description. The child would run away from my group and since I was alone I would have to call my supervisor who would sometimes not answer her phone when needed. This endangered the other children because I would have to go after that child and would be forced to leave the remaining group alone. The other camp counselors and I were overworked and underpaid, it was a very daunting experience but did not end there. Now I am working at another organization which is an affiliate of the YMCA but part of a collaboration of DCYF and ECS. The supervisor I have has allowed a child with a very contagious viral infection (herpes whitlow) to come to the after school program where he endangers myself and the other staff and children who attend.
My supervisor, Andrea Parra, has not followed through with keeping the child home until a doctor's note has been provided or medication. The child is not receiving proper care—his infected hand has been casually bandaged with gauze but this gauze is usually falling off and now the child's face is covered in blisters and a rash which makes me suspect the infection has spread. Troy O'Leary, Andrea's supervisor, often yells at his employees and is inept and unable to do his job effectively. He is supposed to visit the site on a regular basis but has only shown up twice since I have been there, and several YMCA employees have admittedly quit because of his actions.
He constantly fails to follow through on his responsibilities and is completely unreliable. Andrea Parra often becomes defensive when asked about simple tasks and often uses her position to dominate over staff and consciously makes me and others feel inferior and powerless. She is not emotionally or mentally stable enough to carry out simple tasks and responsibilities. I like the children and staff in the organization, but unfortunately if things do not improve, I will be forced to quit as well.
