Liberty Events Group
Events Planning and Marketing, but no job description can be given when inquired?

Education & Science

So I received a call to work for this company called Liberty Events Group. I was on the road, and in a hurry, so I just agreed to come in for an interview the next day. They claimed the position would be for doing events planning for DARE, and other non-profit organizations. This sounded like it was up my alley, since they found me on monster/hotjobs.

They told me to bring a copy of my resume with references, as well as being dressed business professional. I mean, that's not weird at all, that sounds pretty legit. It was when I went online to get some info the morning of the interview...

I do some googling to see what they're all about, but can't find any hits. No sweat, I call the office and ask if they have a website. Being that they're originally based in Philadelphia and brand new to Pittsburgh, they say no, they don't. Hmm, that's odd, a company that branches out from their headquarters is successful enough to pay people to work and relocate, yet can't afford to have a website.

No big deal, I need their address again so I do a reverse phone number lookup on superpages and find out the building is owned by New Dawn Distribution [a known scammer, with a report on this site that I read about]. I call to inquire, and they claim they are just sharing the building. Okay, now things are definitely smelling foul.

The next time I call, I try to cancel the interview [this was a very long morning] and it goes straight to an answering machine claiming this is the offices of Capital Distribution and Imports. Not only that, but during that answering machine, some guy picks up and goes "MARKETING?" without his name given, then assumes my name is Ryan or something. I ask about the voicemail, and he claims that the girl who called me is in a completely different company but they all use the same phone, and that Capital Imports was the old company that was in this building. Right.

When I finally get a hold of the girl to ask what this is about, they claim no ties to New Dawn, but she will NOT give me any sort of straight answer about the job. I asked if it was door to door or anything, she just repeats, verbatim, what she said the day before, and calms my convictions.'No door to door, no telemarketing, no b2b, we are an events planning group.' I ask her what that means, and she says 'Well, if you come in for your interview, I'll tell you all about it.'

I tell them that I'm not exactly close to the office and I need to know more, such as what the job details are or the pay scale, and she responds with 'Well, you'll just have to come in and find out.' And then she says 'I'll see you in a bit!' Needless to say, she will not see me in a bit.

Who knows, this could really be a legit company, but I always felt that if the company doesn't have a website, won't give you direct answers, and answers your questions with scripted responses that deflect your inquiries, it really cannot be something you're looking for anyhow. And after I asked her all that, I was surprised she didn't just tell me to sod off. Plus, my parents had a bad gut feeling about it, and gave me some sagely advice: "If the building is owned by thieves, you can only expect them to harbor more thieves."
