Unauthorized electronic debit from my checking account $288.88 ripoff

On 5/15/06, there was a fraudulent electronic debit made to my checking account in the amount of $288.88—paid to US Benefits.

I immediately contacted by bank by using their 800 number, available 24 hours a day. They were able to tell me that the payment was made to US Benefits in Howard Beach, NY. I called directory assistance to get a phone number for this place. They had no listing for a US Benefits in Howard Beach, NY.

They did, however, have a listing in Albany, NY. I called and spoke with someone in the Albany, NY location. Their phone number is 518-427-7470. She said they never heard of a US Benefits in Howard Beach, NY. That would be on Long Island.

As I started to explain the unauthorized debit to her, she asked me, "by any chance, would the amount be $288.88?" Her office has been receiving phone calls for the last month, all pertaining to the misuse of the name "US Benefits", and all in the unauthorized debit amounts of $288.88.

She also advised me that they had received a phone call from US Benefits in Texas. The manager of that facility contacting them to discuss this problem, as it was happening in Texas as well.

Bank is investigating. Don't know yet if I'll get my money back.
