Attempted ripoff, but we didn't bite

Anderson Crenshaw & Associates called my home this evening. At first the guy was very mysterious. He proceeded to accuse my husband of stealing someone's social security number to purchase an alarm system. I assured him that he had the wrong guy. We've been married 19 years and I know him better than I know myself! He continued with some phoney story, naming names and past addresses that we supposedly used. He even recited the last four digits to my social security number to let me know he had the right number!
At that point I was extremely worried as to how he had my ss number, then I became angry. I know we have done nothing like what he described, and I accused him of trying to run a scam. Of course, he denied it. I then told him I would not be answering any more of his questions, and he should continue his investigation until he found the right person.
How is this company able to get away with these tactics? This type of practice is very upsetting and dead wrong! How do we stop these guys?
