Carpet Mills Of America
Carpet Mills of America has poor installation practices. Damaged home. Rip-off!

Construction & Repair

In mid I paid Carpet Mills of America over $7500 to install tile, carpet, and Pergo in our home. At the time, there were the usual glitches with any major work: Scheduling problems forced the tile contractors to hurry. I actually had to break up an argument between one of the tile guys and one of the Pergo guys. The Pergo installers broke one of our cable outlets by moving an armoire without first unplugging things. They fixed this, but several months later I had to have Time Warner come out and redo the fix because it was not done right. They left some scratches on walls and the tile installers really made a mess with the grout all over the walls, tub, shower, baseboards, etc. Some baseboards were cracked as well.

Now, almost 1.5 years later, the real issues are starting to show up: The Pergo is separating at the seam in the middle of our entrance - I believe this is a result of them not properly leveling this area as they did in other areas (all installation was over a concrete slab). The separation is propogating as dirt is forced into the crack over time. Even more serious is the master bathroom: At the time I was on crutches so I was more than willing to pay the installer their extra charge to replace the toilet.

As I mentioned, scheduling problems caused the tile guys to rush because they were supposed to be out prior to the Pergo guys coming. They installed the toilet while I was watching the Pergo people. The toilet was always a slightly wobbly after that, but I just figured I needed to tighten the flange bolts a litte and had no odor so I wasn't overly concerned. About one month ago, I noticed a slight odor so I attempted to tighten the flange bolts. The toilet then wobbled even more than before.

After removing the toilet, the problem was immediately apparent: They had not installed a flange extender to raise the height of the toilet flange to the same level as the new floor (with tile). Thus the toilet had no real structural support other than the wax ring. This actually resulted in the original flange (which is permanently affixed to the house plumbing and embedded in the house slab) being completely broken. I had a licensed plumber take a look at the situation and he said the only recourse is to break the surrounding tile and jack-hammer the house slab to replace the plumbing below the flange. All because CMA couldn't install a $3 flange extender. The plumber said this was gross negligence.

Talked to CMA Customer Service today and was quickly put in touch with "Zeina", their area Ops Manager. She offered very little assistance with either issue - the Pergo installation is now out of warrantee - she did say she'd give me the number for Pergo so they could see if it is a product related issue, which is warranteed for 20 years, but it is pretty obviously an installation issue. On the toilet flange, she found some fine print in the contract that says they are not responsible for ANY damages related to their installation of a toilet: plumbing, water damages, etc. She refused to give me any contacts at their corporate level. Am contacting a lawyer, now.
