Real estate/insurance, lied to my face and took my money!

I had seen an ad on craiglist for a house for rent of a 3 bd & 2 bth. The ad did not have pricing however it did have (Joe - 562-376-4687). I quickly called and spoke to Joe who invited me to his office in Bellflower titled Real Estate/Insurance. Joe asked what I was looking for and what pricing in what area.

He then gave me print outs of a house inside and out. He also gave me two other ones, which i did not like. The house he said was for $1,300 and I fell in love with it! I asked what I needed to do to order to apply. Joe then told me I would automatically get approved regardless of my credit as long as I had no evictions.

The next thing he told me was he needed a deposit for $180 to hold the house from other people viewing it. He guaranteed me that I would get this house as long as I had proof of income. Next he had me fill out a form, which was a contract. I filled it out, signed it and gave the money to him. I had to pay CASH ONLY because he did not except checks.

So I asked when I would be able to see the house. He then said I would need to drive to the house and check it out from the outside. This was to make sure I really wanted this house. If I did I would need to fax over their "new home viewing form" to their customer service. Their customer service would set me up with the homeowner.

As soon as I left their office I knew I had made a BIG mistake. I felt this was too good to be true. I drove to see the property and the neighbor were outside. I then introduce myself and asked if they knew who the owner was. I explained that I had just come from Milestone who was advertising this house for rent. Luckily they gave the owner my number. I then received a call from the owner who had told me the house had already been leased for a year to a couple 2 weeks ago. Also, the rent was never $1,300 it was $2,200 dollars. I then asked the owner to email me his information. He confirmed he knew nothing of this company that I paid. He also offered to help me in any way he could.

The next day I faxed over the form as Milestone requested. I spoke to a Veronica and asked when I would meet with the owner. She said I could call back to check. (I wanted to see what they would tell me.) I already knew that they had lied and took my money.

I kept calling to talk to Joe. I kept getting the round around. I would call almost every hour and they would tell me he would call in 20 mins. I called all day and never got a call back. I was so upset! I called The Department of Real Estate, consumer affairs and have a special investigation on them.

That same day when I got off work I paid them a visit. I demanded to speak to Joe. The staff then told me he was not in. I told them I wanted my money back. I then spoke to Veronica who told me she was very sorry. She apologized and was embarrassed after I told her that I spoke to the owner of the house. I asked her why would Joe lie to me and take my money? Why would you guys lie to people and take their money? She said she couldn't answer those questions and that she was sorry. And sorry that Joe had provided all false information. She gave me a form to fill out for my refund. I told her I wanted it now and she said she couldn't.

I then left and called a sheriff to file a report. I don't think they knew I was waiting outside. About 30 mins later I walked in only to find Joe at his desk. He had been hiding the whole time!!! I then asked why he would lie to my face and hide from me. He said he didn't do anything wrong and he has been in business for 3 years. Also, that he wasnt hiding. He could not answer any of my questions and he stayed quite. He said he had done nothing wrong.
Once the sheriff arrived he told me I would need to file a complaint through court. He could not help me, but he would keep record on filing stating he showed up. After the sheriff left Veronica, Joe and the whole team refused to refund my money. They said they couldnt help me especially since I called the sheriff down there. Veronica said if I wanted my money back I would need to take them to court.
That is what I plan on doing even if I dont get my money back! If I have to pay more money and time, I will still do this. I know that $180 dollars is not much. But its the principal! This company SHOULD NOT be allowed to continue and rip-off more people.
I have learned my lesson! But with this, I will also help warn people from letting this company take their money! Please help spread the word!
