Analog to digital tv

Dear Friends,
In summer I live outside the broadcast zone and I feel that the next generation of tv viewers has been cheated. We all would just lug in the tv and depending on the placement of the antenna we would get a wide variety of channels, from Sesame Street to Oprah and news of all sorts. Now I have the struggle of getting only three channels with the aid of my antenna and digital box and they are all christian channels. I was told that the big stations just don't send out the signal - is that true?
I think we have gone in the wrong direction and by doing so left a vast majority of people to remain tv-barren.
