We hired Gordie to remodel our home. Albeit this was a few years ago, but after discovering this website and reading another testimonial about this buffoon's underhandedness, we wanted to add our share of horror.
Knowing nothing about remodeling or construction back then, we looked around at different contractors and Gordie had the lowest bid. Naturally, we went with it not knowing what we know now from experience.
First, the remodel job took twice as long as he quoted and cost us storage and living quarters for a year, instead of the 6 months promised. Gordie also misquoted the construction costs and in the end, demanded more money from us. To be precise, somewhere around the price of 30k. We refused to pay and Gordie in turn withheld money from his subcontractors and had them put a lien on the house to get us to pay them extra in the end. After consulting with an attorney, we had no choice but to pay the subcontractors and ultimately, we even gave Gordie some extra money to get rid of him, but we truly wanted him out of our lives and it was worth every penny!!! He is whiny and complains incessantly, forgetting that he is the "professional" at work. Think expensive Chinese water torture!
Other horrors involved Gordie telling us that our desire to install nice fixtures in our home were extras and would cost us, however we paid for those extras out of our own pocket and placed orders ourselves. Gordie never spoke to us prior construction phase about or brought to our attention anything regarding the all important finishing touches on a house... Such as the fixtures mentioned, lavatory selections, sink selections, or even something as tiny as a doorstop. We ordered items according to our budget and because Gordie negligently misquoted his construction costs, he obnoxiously demanded more money over these few items.
Throughout the progression of the remodelling job, Gordie insisted on giving his opinions regarding our choices in everything from sinks to countertops. He would go as far as to argue with us about why he would personally not choose certain designs. He took it upon himself to install features that we did not pick out, exchange items without our permission and install items he picked out. At one point I travelled to a store to check up on my order and make sure Gordie was going to pick it up, instead of finding everything in order, the clerk showed me where Gordie cancelled the order. After calling him in front of the clerk and having the clerk speak to him, he denied cancelling the order despite the clerk calling him a liar after they got off the phone. We did get our fixtures, but apparently Gordie saved a buck elsewhere and used our credit from that store for other items.
Gordie became extremely aggressive towards the finish and every meeting was confrontational in nature.
The end result:
Our flooring has gaps where wood was cut too short and the pieces have shifted outward toward the base of the walls, thus causing the gaps. Molding does not come flush with the floor around ALL doorways in the house, but measures a quarter of an inch to half an inch above the floor. A year after the house was finished we discovered that 4 doors could be pushed open despite being shut and locked, because notches were cut too far into the door frame and the bolt mechanisms would not catch when the doors were shut. We had unfinished shower heads that could be pulled away from the wall so that the piping was exposed. Lighting in one room ceased to work, even after Gordie called someone to come fix it. There were countless sloppy errors and we just left it alone for fear of ever seeing that man on our property again.instead, it was worth the money to hire someone who was professional and capable of handling the sloppy work Gordie was supposed to oversee. (No harm meant for the poor subcontractor Gordie allegedly ripped off... I'm certain he worked for Gordie after our dealing with him).
The ultimate insult, he whined because we did not want to have a personal relationship with him. He was so worried about being friends and making friends that he could not maintain a professional manner and remember he was getting paid to do his work, let alone that word of mouth is what builds a business like his.
