It all begins innocent enough. You see an ad in the classified employment listings of high beginning salary, no skill necessary, and willingness to train.

During the interview they tell you a little about themselves, that they are a fire education and life protecting company. They send you door to door to educated the households about fire safety and protected life (selling smoke and heat detectors). This is acceptable to most people because they are not the ones having to drum up business (so far).

Life Safety & Company teaches you many facts and statistics about fires and life saving equipment which is good information but later in the course you find out that the detectors average over $250.00 each. The average household will need at least six of these. This company is so concerned about saving lives that they allow a charge of 21% APR to its customers that can't pay in full and up front.

Not only do they want to save lives but also to liberate people from their hard earned money. They will give their buyers three days to return the detectors for a full refund with a signed release agreement for it to be legal. That's not much time to change your mind and realize that you have been had. They have studied the legal issues well enough to evade the law, but are very unethical in dealing with their customers.

On graduation day of training you learn that you are the one that will drum up most of the business because now you're a private contractor for them. This means that you do your own accounting, tax deductions, and other administrative measures for your new contracting business. Notice that you have come a long way from the news paper ad to the final outcome. These people manage you through ignorance from the first day to the last. Notice in their training how every thing is all positive and there is nothing negative to what they say. They play down all the pitfalls to their business and your role in it. They with hold information about your role in their business until the very end.

Their main goal is to get people in so that they can give them sales pitch every day and get them to buy their product. They play on people's emotions and the promise of high pay to get them to purchase their detectors. Getting people to work for them is only a secondary benefit in their eyes. Please think these things through carefully and don't be duped like I was.
