Installed garage door opener battery backup which did not work

The company installed a new garage door and opener. A couple of visits were needed before it worked properly. Vann then sold me a battery backup for the opener, for a few hundred dollars. The backup did not work. After having one of his techs visit the premises a couple of times to "reset" the battery backup, it still did not function, and he later admitted that this particular model was a problem, that it did not work, and that he could give me a $300 credit, and remove the whole unit and backup, and install a brand new opener with a battery backup built in. He said that "add on" battery packs did not work well, and he seemed to have been aware of that before he even installed the unit. He said it would cost me, after the credit, a little over five hundred dollars.

We did not choose to spend the additional money at that point, but about six months later, we called him to discuss having the work done, since we had been without power one day for nine hours, and could not get our cars out of the garage. We put in at least four calls and left messages on his machine, but never got a call back.

We finally hired another company to remove the opener and backup, and replace it with an opener which had a built in backup. It was a far more expensive unit, and more sophisticated than the unit Vann had put in, and it cost only $500. We had a second estimate of under $500 as well. The bottom line here is that not only did Vann sell us a unit which he knew would not work, but he lied about giving us a credit for the battery backup. He was actually going to charge even more for the new unit than two other companies, who were not issuing a credit for anything.

He also never called back, and is therefore unreliable, as well as having misrepresented the "favor" he was doing us by crediting us for the unit which did not work.
