Deborah Stephens "That Southern Touch Painting" is a scam artists, barely shows up to work, shows up drunk, lies about when work will be completed, scams money but, doesn't want to finish

On May 29 I closed on my house and was referred by my realestate agent Jane Warlock of Sphinx Realty to a contractor that she knew that did good work. As our basement was in need of remodeling such as walls being replaced and rooms extended and so on. Being on a budget we went with the contractor trusting our agents judgement.By this being my fiance's and my self first time buying a home we didn't know all of the issues involved with getting a contractor. We got a written proposal from Deborah Stephenson (ThatSouthern Touch Painting). She got the first installment of $1042.50 and committed to begin work on that following Monday which was June 1. She didn't begin that week due to some issue with her truck so she began that following week. Now she was suppose to do 2bedrooms and extend a wall in the bathroom and a room which I was going to turn into a dining room. Now she has completed one bedroom the living room, part of the living room is half done and the other bedroom isn't finished, and my extension in the bathroom is still not complete. It is now July and she has been making excuses she is sick, she went to jail, ignoring my calls. Before that on July 8, she says she doesn't have enough money for the rest of the materials so we gave her the remaining balance to help her (anything to get the work accomplished). She has cashed the check and have only seen her once since she has cashed the check. My better judgement being ignored I didn't really want to give her the check. I did make her sign a contract stating the check#, when the work would be completed by 7/11. It has yet, to be completed and as stated she is ignoring all calls and not giving an explanation as to why she isn't completing the job. If someone could please help with this first-time home buying nightmare. Please help sincerely, Erica Avant
