American Home Shield
Covered items not up to code

Construction & Repair

We filed a service report on our A/C system as it was no longer cooling our house and we had air conditioning coverage on our warranty. AHS sent out a technician in their network who checked the air conditining system and agreed there was a major problem with the unit and that the unit needed replacement. After notifying AHS about the problem and asking for advisement, the technician proceeds to bring us paperwork stating the component that needed repair and tell us that the warranty company has declined covering the repair due to the system not being up to code. I am highly suprised that this is the conclusion as the system was obviously professionally installed. I called my own independant air conditioning repair company and paid out of pocket to get to the bottom of this. The official results are that yes, the air conditioning system is not up to code TODAY, but was up to code at the time of original installation. AKA, its going to cost too much money for them to cover the repair, so they have found a reason not to. Personally, I think this is just a convenient excuse because building codes are always changing and evolving. I could understand non coverage if the system was installed incorrectly by someone that was unlicensed. I would also like to add that the air conditioning techinician sent by AHS was just as frustrated as we were by the outcome of their decision to disregard coverage.
