Millers Carpet One
Rip off on laminate floor - blaming everything but their installation!

Construction & Repair

I purchased a laminate floor manufactured by Columbia from Millers Carpet One 2 years ago and had it installed by them in my dining and living room. About six months after I had the floor, two of the planks became raised up and the edges compressed. I called Millers and they sent their installer out who told me "live with it, it won't get any worse".

A few months later I spilled a drink on the floor and immediately cleaned it up but the floor swelled up all around the joint. I also started getting other areas of compression so I again called Millers. They came out and determined that it must be defective flooring and they would contact the manufacturer (supposedly as a favor to me since they said the consumer was responsible once they laid the floor).

The manufacturer sent an inspector out to check the floor and the bottom line was that they claimed it was not a manuafacturing defect but the only thing that would cause this problem was mosisture or a defective installation of the floor. The inspector noted there was no mositure anywhere on the floor (as indicated by her meter).

I called Carpet One and spoke with Roger who handles the claims about Millers being responsible since they had done the installation. He told me that it was from moisture and that I was responsible and should have my home owners cover it. I told him that the inspector checked the whole floor for moisture and there was none. He said if it was the installation, it would have happened within 30 days. This is not true because the weather and the hot and cold causes expansion at any time.

I asked to speak with the owner of the company and Roger said the owner was not interested in these problems and he, Roger, made the decisions. He refused to do anything to resolve my floor problem, probably because my floor is discontinued and they could not just replace a few planks but would have to give me a whole new floor!

I bought a laminate floor because it was used in kitchens and baths and was supposed to hold up. I find Millers Carpet One's attitude towards their customers outrageous. I spent $5,000 on a floor that looks like hell. It's a shame that consumers get ripped off by stores and their only alternative is to get a lawyer and pay more out of their own pocket!
