Construction & Repair

I've lived out of state for over 4 years and recently moved back to Oklahoma. Desperately I searched for a job that paid at least as much as I was paid while living in Georgia. While searching the local job market I even went as far as Tulsa and Oklahoma City. I found a few different ads in OKC that caught my attention, especially an appointment clerk position that paid $2375 per month and had a benefit package. I should have listened to my gut instinct, after all, if it sounds to good to be true, it probably is.

I was employed by "Covenant Filtration, " a company that sells filtration systems, water softeners, and reverse osmosis systems to residences and businesses. At 1st the job seemed ideal: the company sets up 3 appointments per day, they had "over 60,000 leads, " and they offered generous compensation to do in-home water testing (shows as they call them) 3 per day x 5 days a week= 15 per week and 60 per month which was the 30-day quota.

In addition to good pay for working about 6-7 hours per day, they offered a benefit package available after 90 days, as well as fringe benefits for the sales we made. For example, the 1st weekend after training, they offered us prizes we could "win" in a contest for sales... Such as $400 and a 5 day, 4 night cruise for two to the Bahamas for the 1st sale, $400 and a palm pilot, leather briefcase, or radar detector for the 2nd, 3rd was another $400 and a $250 shopping spree for work clothes, and 4th for $1000.

The "contest" supposedly went thru the weekend only, thru Sunday at midnight, but Monday they extended thru Tuesday midnight, and on Tuesday (although I wasn't there on Tuesday) they extended thru Thursday night. I made 1 sale on Sunday and actually worked "down to the wire, " closing the sale at exactly midnight!

They told us that the sales that were made prior to Thursday midnight got paid the following Monday morning. Imagine my surprise when I went to work this morning... No check. Had to wait until 3:00 pm. Okay, no big deal, I just have to wait around the city for a couple extra hours before I can do my "shows." So at 2:30 I go back to the office and tell them that I have a show at 4:00. Which I did. And that it takes me over an hour to get home.

Add another 30 minutes to get to the show and get set up! They told me that because the finance company hadn't cleared the setup and installation with the customer that bought the system from me, I'd have to wait until the following Monday to get my check! Needless to say, I was LIVID!

I asked a marketing manager if the customer was to get a hold of the finance company if I'd be able to pick up my check. They told me yes. So I did, called the customer, had her call the finance company, then waited to sign for my $400 and cruise vouchers! Once they finally got everything squared away, Aaron Wells, one of the marketing managers, called me back to his office so I could sign for my check! I followed him into his office, sat down as he handed me the check, and to my astonishment, I didn't have $400 on my check, but only $100! I was depending on that check for gas and to pay the deposit on an apartment!

When I asked Aaron why I was shorted $300 on my paycheck, he stated that the $400 depended on the credit line my customer landed on! When I stated that our class wasn't told about the a, b, or c-line until the Monday AFTER I'd made my sale, he argued with me, and stated that if I didn't "stop with the negative attitude, " I should just turn in my kit! I told him that the whole company was a sham.

The two weeks I worked there, several things that we were taught during training were contradicted.

Other examples of the scam:
1. Offering a 5 year supply of soap and cleaning supplies (shampoo, laundry detergent, air freshener, furniture polish, etc.) as an incentive for the customer. The company provided us with a leather case with all of the different supplies in sample form...
THE CATCH: Although we'd been told EVERYTHING in the leather case was included in the 5 year supply, they later stated, after our customer's had been shorted 1/2 their supplies, that only one side of the case was included in the 5 year supply.

2. Stating that we were guaranteed NEVER to go door-to-door because they have enough leads that it'll take "over a year to sort thru" as stated by Mike York.
THE CATCH: for 3 days we've been required to go door-to-door having people sign up for a "$500 gas card give-a-way." The people that sign the flyer agree that the only reason anyone will call is if they win the $500 gas card or if they win a free water analysis, "A $150 Value, " which there is no charge for anyway. The catch is that the flyer says "$500 gas give-a-way with in home water analysis." This makes the consumer think they get the $500 is someone comes into their home and tests their water.

3. Guaranteed that each water analyst will have 3 demos each day set by the office.
THE CATCH: For 4 days, no demos for any of the group that started on 7/11/07 because we're forced to go door-to-door or ride with one of the other 3 "veterens" (There definition of veteren is anyone who's been there thru the 3 day training course and starts a full week.)

4. Told that as long as we tried and did the best we could at the demos and flyers ("All I can ask of ya'll is that you do the best you can!" Mike York) we wouldn't be fired. That we would have to terminate employment ourselves.
THE CATCH: Today we were told by Aaron that if we didn't have 10 flyers signed when we came in the next day we should just turn in our water test kits!

5. Guaranteed that the demos the office sets will be potential clients that are aware of the "show" and how long it will take.
THE CATCH: Although I never had office set demos, I rode with a "veteran" who had been with the company only 3 weeks and the 1st demo that was verified wasn't interested in having their water tested, had no idea we would take at least an hour to do the test and show the benefits of soft water, and already owned a system from a competitor so had no intention on buying a filtration system.in addition to that the wife stated that the only reason they agreed to the test was so they could win the Hummer that was on display at Penn Square Mall in OKC.

6. Told that a single woman would never go to an unmarried man's house and vice versa, also that if the house being tested was owned by a married couple, both parties had to be present.
THE CATCH: The "veteran" I rode with was sent to a single woman's house and he had the appointment set up BEFORE I was asked to ride with him. Therefore man was sent to single woman's house.

I'm just very frustrated because I wasted 2 weeks of my time, money, and gas to drive back and forth to the city. Once again, over 1 hour one way. Not to mention that the system I sold was to a friend. I'm now worried that what I told her when I sold it to her, is bull just like the rest has turned out to be! My concerns are for her as the consumer as well as myself as the disgruntled employee of the company! I also know that from my group alone there are at least 5 people that are embarrassed and stressed out over this situation. There were only 12 out of 18 of us still with them the Monday after the "friends and family" weekend.

I just want to warn everyone else that sees the 5 or more ads they place in the paper and responds that is is a hoax, a scam, and everyone involved there is in on it, even if they seem honest and ligitamately sincere. There are different names for the same scam and they are listed under 4 different employment catagories in the "Daily Oklahoman" AND they have at least 4 different phone numbers to call, I called at least 3 for Covenant Filtration and 1 for AquaFUZION!
