Recliner Disintegrated Two Years after Purchase

Construction & Repair

07/06

About two years ago, we purchased a theater recliner set from the La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries in Clovis, California (Fresno area). At the time of purchase, we were told emphatically by the salesman that the chairs had a lifetime warranty for defects in workmanship, and that it included "everything, " insofar as it was related to a manufacturing defect.

We paid $1,600.00 for the two recliners, with microfiber covering.included in that was an extra fee for "lifetime" warranty coverage for the exterior fabric, which was purportedly "specially-treated" to prolong its new appearance and integrity.

Last week, one of the recliners completely fell apart; the frame broke and the chair sunk in toward the floor, making it useless. The recline mechanism no longer functions, and the fabric under the chair was ripped. We have no children, and the chairs have only been used appropriately by two adults.

Upon contacting the local La-Z-Boy store where we purchased the recliners, we were informed that only the parts are under warranty, that we will have to pay for pickup and return, and will have to also pay all labor charges at $95.00 per hour!!! To add insult to injury, we were also told that the fabric warranty is through an independent company and not La-Z-Boy; the salesman told us the extended fabric warranty was through La-Z-Boy.

The fabric on the chairs appears worn, well beyond two years. The stuffing in the island that connects the two recliners has shifted down, leaving a large gap that looks very bad.

We contacted the national offices of La-Z-Boy (Brenda @ 734-241-2436), and found them to be unwilling to repair the recliner without additional charges.

A chair that cost $800.00 (only one is broken), should last for more than two years before falling apart and becoming completely unusable. La-Z-Boy does NOT stand behind their product and the recliner is obviously an inferior piece of furniture. It was also true that their salesman lied about the actual terms of the warranties involved and the quality of the recliners, stuffing, and fabric.

I would recommend to others that they purchase their furniture, if at all possible, through such sellers as Costco or Sam's Club, as both of these stores will refund the entire purchase price if their furniture falls apart two years after purchase.
