Construction & Repair

To anyone in the Dallas/Fort Worth (North Texas) area. Beware of a home remodeler/contractor/framer named Charles Harwell. He worked on our home remodel project and it was the worst experience in my life. He was extremely difficult to work with, left the project unfinished, and left nearly $1,000 of damage that was promised to be resolved but wasn't.

He invited his friends (strangers to us) into our house that were just hanging out - not part of the construction crew. And some of his crew were noticeably drunk or high.

The project budget was $85,000 and we paid him a 25% down-payment when the contract was signed. The first thing he did was purchase a brand-new truck!

While Harwell came recommended from another contractor, he clearly was in over his head. He kept promising to do the job right and we were wrong for trusting him. When he left midway through the project, we voided his contract.

We are not sure of his whereabouts, as certified mail to his physical address has been returned as "undeliverable". He may be elsewhere in North Texas or possibly Arkansas where he claims he is from. He is late 20's/early 30's, about 6 feet-2 inches tall with short blond hair, bad teeth, and (I think) green eyes. He has a slight drawl and could possibly be going by another name. He also works with another guy he claimed was a cousin - about 5 foot-9 inches, brown hair, moustache, fat - who also claims to be a landscaper.

Texas does not have a licensing requirement for residential contractors. Everyone we've talked with has some bad experience with a contractor. If you encounter Harwell or his cousin, run the other way! Our experience with him was that he performed poorly, did not do what we asked, was irresponsible, and caused damage to our home that was not repaired by him.
