Changed Price After Completing Work Ripoff

One of the things that drew me to Rod's Appliance Service was his assurance that he was honest and upfront and the other was that once he gave someone an estimate and they approved the work he wouldn't "change the price". He was also big on promoting a cash discount but a cash discount was never really "disclosed".

So I asked him to come and give us an estimate. He diagnosed the problem and stated that with the "cash discount" and including the diagnostic fee (or trip charge) & part that my total cost would be $XX. I approved it but stupidly (I admit my mistake) didn't ask for that in writing before the work began. When he was finished as I went to pay him the work suddenly was $YY. No detailed breakdown, no explanation, no extra long work, nothing.

As he left he also stated he doesn't keep any records. WTH? How do you run a business if you don't keep records. That if I needed to use my "warranty" I would have to have MY invoice to prove the work (well duh, I keep all my paperwork but why don't YOU keep records... Now I understand where the "cash discount" comes in).

My advice... Steer clear of this company and do even more research than I did (and I did a LOT). And of course, the simpler way is to get it in writing BEFORE authorizing any work.
