Auto renewal & popups - McAfee VirusScan

I had a McAfee product that was due to expire in June of this year.in May of this year I received an email from McAfee informing me they had hit my credit card for the price of renewal. When I protested that I had not agree to the transaction, they first told me it was part of insuring my continued protection and then that it was part of the "click-on" agreement. I have not renewed and since then am getting pop-ups that tell me I am unprotected and one that tries to get me to renew my license. Their customer support people told me the only way I could get rid of the pop-ups was to renew; this from an organization that is supposed to be protecting its customers from things like unwarranted hits on credit cards and pop-ups.
