Microsoft
XP backup - Windows7

Computers & Services

I used the windows backup on my old desktop to backup files to an external hard drive. Using my primary computer, a Windows 7 laptop, I was unable to open the files. After 20 minutes of holding I finally reached customer service and was told that the Windows 7 backup program can not read files backed up by the XP backup program. The tech indicated that it is perfectly normal for different versions of the operating system not to communicate with each other and seemed to indicate that I should have known that. I went to the links he suggested and used the download he suggested. I did the validation process, got the download for a 64 bit system and the download could not read the XP files either. I have wasted hours on this and have received no support from microsoft. I was told I had to pay $99 dollars if I wanted tech support from Microsoft.
