Cannot buy without nordstrom credit card

I went shopping with a friend July 6. Found shirts I liked on sale, and when I tried to pay for them, they said no, cannot sell for marked sales price unless I had a Nordstrom credit card. I was/am shocked and walked away without my purchase.
