Duke of Oil, Highland, Indiana Provided false information to secure unnecessary services

Cars & Transport

On Tuesday, April 17th I went to Duke of Oil, Highland, IN for a needed oil change. After a few minutes a associate approached me and stated that my car was in need of a radiator/coolant flush and power steering flush.

He stated that if the radiator/coolant flush wasn't done it could lead to cracks, etc in the engine, etc. A test tube of the coolant was present and didn't look cloggy (as I have seen it before).

He also presented a strip with a sample of Power Steering liquid on it, which appeared to be very light brown. He stated that it is suppose to be clear. He said that isn't something you wanted to let go, as his just went and it cost him around $500.

He asked if the Powering steering fluid had ever been replaced and I stated I didn't think so, but, wasn't sure. I then asked how often are you suppose to have the radiator/coolant flushed and he stated at least every 2 years.

I stated that I believe the radiator/coolant flush had been performed early last year. He quoted me prices for both services.

I then asked him out of the two which would he recommend doing, which one was the more critical at that time? He said he would do the radiator/coolant flush personally.

Even though I was unsure that it was really necessary I opted to have the radiator/coolant service performed based on his professional advice. The service was quoted at $129.99 with $10 off.

After getting home it was still bothering me that it hadn't really been necessary added with the fact he didn't explain anything about the sample of coolant he had brought with him (other oil places in the past have explained what the optimum level should be, color and consistency should be as well - none of this was offered).

I looked up the records on my car and was very dismayed to see that it had been done in August which isn't even a year.

I am adult and realize I could have said no. However, when you are relying on a professionals advice regarding your form of transportation to and from work, you should be able to believe them.

It also stated on the receipt under "checklist" that the radiator fluid was "ok".

I feel that Duke of Oil in Highland, IN outright lied to me regarding the radiator/coolant flush was needed in order to profit off me. The $129.99 minue $10 off is a lot of money these days which I could have put towards an already confirmed and needed repair on the car. A copy of the receipt can be provided. It does not let me copy and paste to this page or attach it as a pdf file.
