Progressive Insurance. What a rip off

In August I visited Asa Insurance bronkers here in Salt Lake looking to purchase some automobile insurance, after taking the normal information from me the agent presented me with 2 choices AIG and Progressive. Progressive was the least expensive of the 2 so I signed up with them. I was told for 6 months it would be x amount and I would be able to pay monthly which I agreed. I received all the paper work from Progressive within a matter of days after signing up.

3 months went by then I lost my job and could not afford the insurance so I parked my car. As I was unable to send in the monthly payment my inurance was cancelled on the 4th month. I now am being billed for 3 months of insurance coverage even though they had cancelled me for non payment. How can they make me pay for a service I did not have?
