Single Parent ripped off for $500 after given in writing it was fully refundable!

On Feb 11 I went to Pt. St. Lucie Motors to view a Nissan Nautica van, advertised as Fully Loaded in an ad on Craig's List as follows: 1999 Nissan Quest Nautica Edition. Leather. Loaded.
Later I saw this add on his website:

Charles greeted me and told me he was the owner of PSL Motors for 21 years. The Nautica he showed me was very dirty inside and out, in addition to missing two seats, and was not running. Charley insisted that he would have everything cleaned and repaired. I told him I was not sure I wanted the vehicle unless it could be painted, cleaned up, and repaired for my son and I to have reliable transportation. After he assured me that it would be completely repaired with a 30 day bumper to bumper warranty, I agreed to put a deposit down if it was fully refundable.

He wrote up a receipt for my deposit as fully refundable before 2-27-09. After contemplating the situation and all the repairs needed. I phoned PSL Motors the next day to request a cancellation and a full refund. I left a message for Charles to void my check and mail it back to me. He said that could not be down and that he'd return it after it cleared the bank. The next day (Friday afternoon) I went to my bank to get a copy of my $500 check that had been cleared by PSL Motors. I phoned Charles and he said it needed to clear his bank. I told him to refund it as soon as that happened.

I phoned him again on Tuesday, Feb 17 and again on Thursday, Feb 19, wherein he refused to mail it to me or deposit it into my bank account. He told me to drive down from my job in Sebastian all the way to Port St. Lucie to get the refund. When I did, I asked the Police Dept to come with me for protection. Charles slandered me profanely in front on my son and the police and refused to refund the $500, telling me to take him to court. He refused to give me a business card and his last name and told the Policeman to escort me off his property.

As I left, he said go to hell, among other profane words and I told him God bless you. Charles. I was shocked at the hostile behavior and this ripoff experience. I went to the courthouse, only to find that Small Claims Court would cost me money and take up to 3 days off my job (which I could not afford to do). I'm a single parent & PSL Motors Manager Charles took my mortgage money.
