Deceptive Business Practices/Policy Cancellation via a Loophole

Cars & Transport

I have been a GEICO policy holder for about 18 years.in April 08, I added my fiance and his son to my policy. Isn't that what you're supposed to do when you share the same address? We reported an accident his son was involved in in February and my fiance's DUI in July. We were uncertain as to whether GEICO would even agree to the policy change. They assured my it was "not a problem".. I was a "preferred customer" and that was why they were writing the changes. I thought, this is great.in addition, I had a claim for a very small accident where I backed into someone. At least it was reported that I did. There was positively no damage on my vehicle and a grand total of $410.00 damage to the other vehicle (no parts - just paint and labor).

In 18 years of coverage I have had the following: 1 Windshield repair/1 Windshield replacement/$410.00 in damges to another vehicle.

GEICO never looked at my vehicle. I took pictures and contacted GEICO and asked where to send them. Never heard from anyone. I had to track down the claims person to make sure that they understood that I was barely moving in this situation so I would suggest they keep that in mind when looking at this vehicle.

About two weeks ago, I received a non-renewal letter from GEICO - effective 10-1-08. The reasons on the letter were the reasons I have stated in this report. I contacted GEICO and requested to speak to a supervisor. That only took 4 days and 4 messages left for a return call. Once I finally spoke to someone this is the background of why this happened. Are you ready for this?

In the state of SC. There is an official term for this, but I can't recall it at this time (I think I was positively livid at this point).. Basically, an auto insurance company cannot deny you a policy. BUT they don't have to re-new the policy. Hence, the loophole.

By the end of August, I will have paid $3113.08 in premiums to GEICO - which they have happily accepted.

They have placed us in a financial bind that will likely affect all of my other obligations right down to my mortgage. With the insurance that he has to have (SR22 until 1/31/09) you have to pay 3 months premuims upfront.

GEICO is great IF the only interaction you have with them is submitting your payments. If you need them for anything else - you'd better hold your breath when policy renewal time rolls around. If you take him out of it, they are even cancelling my for one claim in 18 years for $410.00.

Be very leary with this company. I wish I had heeded warnings from others about them in the past.
