James Toyota, a car dealer located in Flemington, New Jersey, listed a 1997 Pontiac Transport on eBay on July 17. The auction ended on July 20th.
I bid on it but was outbid by supposedly the next highest bidder. This vehicle was listed as being a no reserve auction. I personally spoke with the sales manager Kenn O'Neil who said that it will sell for whatever the highest bid is.
They also advertised that there would be an additional 199.00 "documentation" fee added to the winning auction price. I questioned Kenn O'Neil regarding this $199 bogus fee and he claimed that it was mandated under New Jersey State Statutes, but when asked he could not cite the statute.
I did a search under New Jersey Motor Vehicle and Dealer Statutes... Guess what... I couldn't find any such statute. I supposed that it should not be a surprise.
Four days later the same dealer has the same vehicle listed on another website as being available and for sale for a higher price than what was bid on eBay. This dealer is obviously bidding on or having people that they know bid on their vehicle to jack up the price. Shill bidding.
It's no wonder that car dealers have the reputation that they do... But then if they had a degree in medicine, law, or engineering they wouldn't be selling cars.
