Parts Depot Mbparts
The Demanding & Insulting phone calls for Used Mercedes Benz Parts in unverified condition

Cars & Transport

I posted a wanted ad on eBay for a used Mercedes diesel head and some member that goes by mbparts contacted me with a price of 750.00 for a used head or rebuilt with a valve job, new valve guides and seals for a total of $1000.00. There was also an offer to supply the required gaskets at wholesale prices. After contacting The Parts Depot in High Point North Carolina by the phone number provided. I was getting all kinds of customer service excuses. First the head was off and good but their mechanic did not have it ready to pick up. Next the engine was out of the car and in their shop, but the head was still fastened to the engine.

Two days later, some man from the Parts Depot called me demanding I pay the full amount before the head was removed from the engine. This is where the problems began. This man stated the head is definitely good" and was very insistent that I not come to his place of business for delivery. The salesman refused to give me the casting numbers from the head; this is very important information to verify the correct application. Anyone who becomes belligerent with a potential customer is not worth dealing with.

It is also apparent this dealer knows little about rebuilding diesel heads. $300.00 to install 12 valve guides and grind the valves is way too cheap. First the head has to be pressure tested and surfaced, if it checks out with a magnaflux test. Only a fool will grind exhaust valves in a diesel engine due to the long service of repeated heating and cooling of the valves. This man was also unaware of the cracking problem with this model of diesel engine.

It is my experience as a diesel mechanic to be leery of some shady salesmen who will knowingly misrepresent used parts for their own personal gain. This particular part is known to have a factory defect and susceptible to cracking if the engine ever gets hot. Most engine rebuilders will not reuse this head for the same reason.

Considering the fact that this head is still attached to a junk engine, it is unlikely it is certified to be free of defects as promised. Demands for payment before the merchandise is inspected are unethical. The Parts Depot was demanding I pay in full before the part was removed, and to have it shipped to me without any certainty of its condition other than a presumption of good faith.

After traveling 120 miles to pick up this used cylinder head, there was no sign of anyone on the property. The doors were locked and the sign in the window said CLOSED. I knocked on a door that said office but there was no answer. This is some type of Mercedes Benz Dealer and the presumption of a "slick used car dealer" is my overall impression after the intimidating phone calls.

I have been insulted by this man at the Parts Depot with his demands to purchase a junk head from his inventory without any certainty the part will pass a test for stress cracks. This company presented themselves as a reputable parts business and not as a used car lot. This is most likely why this company representative did not want the item to be picked up in person. Fortunately, I did not give him a credit card number out-of-desperation where it could be fraudulently billed.
