Deliberate Subterfuge - mazda 3

I spent almost 2 hours trying to get an offer for a Mazda 3 to present to my son living in another city. At least 3 times we discussed the possiblity of a lease and I strongly repeated that we were not interested in a lease. They finally present an offer with a stated purchase price $15,500, with a set down payment and monthly payment fee. They specified the model with an automatice transmission and side air bags. I speicifically asked if this was a conventional purchase, and was told this was a conventional puchase.

Today when my son tried to accept the deal he was told that this was for a lease and not a conventional purchase. They called me back to try and tell me I had misunderstood. They admitted they offered a set price, monthly payments and down payment with extras speicified; but continued to insist this was a lease.

How can they misrepresent information with such impunity? How can they offer a set price, down payment and monthly payments and then turn it into a lease? At the end of their lease I will have payed their set base price but have no propritary rights to the vehicle.

Perhaps this is standard for dealerships but it certainly is frustrating. Car salesmen have deservedly earned their poor reputation..
