Won't address the check I'm owed to me alone. Ripoff

I was involved in an accident on 11 May. It was considered a "no fault" accident even though the other motorist crossed 2 lanes of traffic before I t-boned him. There wasn't a huge amount of damage. Only about 1200 dollars to my Freestar. After all this time, I finally get Geico to pay for my claim, HOWEVER, they refuse to address the check to me so I can do my own repairs and save time and money by doing so. Apparently it's their policy to never issue a check to anyone but a body shop. This is my first experience with this kind of tactic. I even contacted the Insurance Commission who informed me that Geico has a history of doing that to a lot of people. Apparently I'm not the only person who feels trapped spending a load of cash to fix a small gash in the bumper that should only cost me a third of what I'll be charged, PLUS what comes out of my pocket!
