Europcar charge customers for clutch replacements! Malaga

I hired a car from Europcar in Malaga on the 24th September at around 7pm. The gears were little stiff and this became gradually worse, so the following morning I took the car back to the nearest Europcar depot. I returned the car less than a day after I had hired it and was given replacement car.
On returning the replacement car at the end of the holiday, I was told that the clutch cable had snapped and that I had been charged 800 Euros from my credit card to replace the cable ($800). I explained that clutch cables wear out gradually through accumulated use and that, as I had had the car for less than a day, I could not be solely responsible for the worn out clutch cable. I was given no help but offered a customer service number.
I am still trying to retrieve my 800 Euros.
