Cars & Transport

I took my Jeep to Tanner Transmissions three times. I'll be fair, I had many problems when I first brought it in. The gears would grind every time I shifted which required time consuming double-clutching. It leaked from the rear-main seal (between engine and transmission). The transfer case leaked. The car vibrated in fifth. The four-wheel drive didn't work at all.

So I took it in to Tanner Transmission expecting, of course, to be extorted with an ability that only mechanics have. I was surprised to say the least.

I expressed the symptoms of my car in writing on my first visit and asked to have a free bid. A week later, having not been contacted, I called Tanner. They told me that they couldn't do a thing unless I authorized them to pull the transmission out of my car at a cost of $450 - which I did.

A week later, having not been contacted, I called Tanner. They told me there were problems with my synchro-mesh and I had to authorize the repairs - which I did.

A week later having not been contacted, I called Tanner. They told me my car was not ready yet and to call them next week.

The following week I called Tanner. They told me to come by in the afternoon - which I did. That afternoon they told me to come by the following morning - which I did. The following afternoon I finally got my Jeep back.

It ground in every gear, requiring me to double-clutch. It leaked from the rear-main seal. It leaked from the transfer case. The car vibrated in fifth. The four-wheel-drive did not work. And my wallet was $2,100 lighter.

I took it back into them and was told about the shifting, "That's how it's supposed to drive." I was told about the leaking and the four wheel that I had never authorized them to fix that. But they would be more than happy to take it back in to give me a free bid. I gave them the keys.

A week later, having not been contacted, I called Tanner. They told me that they had, again, pulled out my transmission and that they had transfer case work that needed to be authorized and would I please stop by - which I did.

Three weeks later I had my Jeep back and they had $500 more of my money. Of course, nothing was fixed and the leaking was worse.

I paid them roughly $2600 dollars and not only were none of my problems corrected, there was a new one: I could not shift the transfer case into the four-wheel-drive position.in fact, my attempt to do so broke off the shifter knob.

I was two months without a car which handicaps a person in my line of work. Some light reading on contractual law tells me that if one person recieves nothing of benefit that a contract is invalid. So essentially, I entered into a contract with Tanner Transmission, they did nothing of value and much of detriment. And I paid them.
